Cleaning your Blank Canvas Cosmetics Brushes
You’ve invested in your brushes so you want them to last. The most certain way to do this is to take proper care of them.
An important part of your beauty routine is regularly cleaning your makeup brushes. It is easy to let this chore go by the wayside, but there are many reasons that you must maintain your makeup brushes. At Blank Canvas, we recommend that you clean your makeup brushes at a minimum of once a month, but if you use your makeup brushes with liquid products or store them uncovered in the bathroom, you should clean them more frequently. Here are the top five reasons you should clean your makeup brushes regularly:
Whenever you use your makeup brushes, they are collecting everything that is on your face — namely, oil, dead skin cells, dust, and anything else clinging to your skin. This is a recipe for disaster (or rather, acne). Every time you use a dirty brush, you are wiping this disgusting combination all over your face, clogging your pores as a result.
Better color application
Dirty makeup brushes are also ineffective for applying color precisely. With old makeup caked on your brushes, you are unable to get the look you’re going for, whether that is naturally blended contour or a dramatic eyeshadow.
Maintain soft brushes
Dirty brushes become more abrasive and dry as they become more caked with product and debris from your face. In turn, this irritates your skin. Cleaning your brushes regularly keeps them soft enough to not cause damage to your face.
Dirty makeup brushes are also a breeding ground for bacteria. Not only is this terrible for your face, it also is bad for your makeup products. Transferring all this bacteria to your products taints them, and what should have lasted you a year will spoil within months.
Longer lasting brushes
When you clean your Blank Canvas makeup brushes regularly, you are preserving them. The more frequently you clean them, the longer your investment will last.

Why should I clean my Blank Canvas Cosmetics Brushes?
Cleaning your brushes not only prevents breakouts and bacteria build up on your skin but also preserves the fibres.
How often should I clean my Blank Canvas Cosmetics Brushes?
All brushes should be flash washed on receipt to allow natural shedding to take place. Some brush types need to be washed more regularly in order to maintain them and prevent product build up.
- Foundation brushes - once a week
- Blenders - once a week
- Eye brushes - every two weeks
- All other brushes - once a month
* This is a guideline and will depend on the amount of use and product used on your brushes.
How do I wash my Blank Canvas Cosmetics Brushes?
You can clean your brushes by using a daily brush cleansing spray or by washing them at the recommended intervals with our gentle brush soap/cleanser.
Use only a pea-sized amount of soap or cleanser. When rinsing the fibres of your brush, ensure that water does not reach or go into the metal ferrule (shiny metal part) as water damage causes the glue to break down and fibres to become loose.
Ensure the fibres of your brush are rinsed well as excess product residue not only damages the fibres of the brush but also allows bacteria to grow, creating breakouts of the skin.
Once your brush has been rinsed thoroughly, place the brush on a clean surface to dry. Brushes can be laid flat or with the fibres at a downward facing angle.
If you feel that you may not be able to prevent water from reaching the ferrule, invest in a good daily brush cleansing spray.
Important: If you see product building up further than halfway down the brush head, it means your brush is being used incorrectly. Brushes that are saturated in product will not last.
