It's easy to get stuck in a makeup rut. You find a look that works for you and you stick with it! Unfortunately, that look that worked for you 10 or 20 years ago probably isn't working for you now. Our faces change so much as we age and it's important to work with the canvas you have now instead of the one you were working with 20 years ago. That's part of aging gracefully!
So how do you update your look as you get older? Here are some helpful hints that will keep you looking fresh no matter what age you are.
You might have been able to get away with wearing cheap makeup when you were in your teens, but as you age those cheap products aren't going to do you any favors. They are made with ingredients that settle into the fine lines and wrinkles on your face and can end up making dry skin flaky. Ditch the cheap products and invest in makeup palettes that contain great colors that work with your skin tone.
You don't want to completely shy away from color as you get older. While you might want to ditch trendy shimmers and neons, don't go completely neutral, either. Older faces are going to lose color, from lips getting thinner and paler to less of a natural rosy glow in your cheeks. You'll want to add some of that natural color back in. Look for warm shades like pinks and apricots.
Older skin doesn't need a lot of makeup; in fact, a heavy application is just going to enhance any lines and wrinkles that you might have on your face. So learn to use a lighter hand when it comes to your makeup application. If you've always used your fingers to apply foundation, switch to a sponge which will help you even out your skin tone without caking on the product. Use less eyeliner and lip liner, too, both of which can settle into fine lines and make them stand out.
If you compare pictures of yourself now to yourself 10 or 20 years ago, you might be surprised to discover the difference that time makes in your eyebrows. Brows tend to get thinner and lighter as we age. Enhancing older brows with some tint can give your entire face a more youthful appearance. Don't go too dark, though, or your brows will end up looking unnatural.
These are just tips, not rules! If you are happier in neon eyeshadow and bright red lipstick well into your 80's, go for it. Makeup is ultimately supposed to be fun and boost your confidence. If breaking all the makeup rules is what you want to do, we'll back you up and make sure you still have all the best tools to get the job done.
